Cognitive Debt, If The Silicon Thinks For You, Then What Are You?

Since the dawn of time, software engineering meant you were hired, handed a stack of vaguely worded Jira tickets, locked in a room, and left to execute a bloody battle royale. It was a chaotic theater of "No, what about this?" and "X is bad, we better do Y." You let everyone pitch their own "No, that's dumb and you're wrong, here's a better way," and you waited. You waited for the team to either debate until everyone was too exhausted to fight and agreed on a compromise, or you waited for the greybeard principal engineer to just dictate the final architecture.

Notice what nobody is doing yet? Opening their laptop and typing out a single line of code.

After that bloodbath, everyone retreated to their desks. The still-lukewarm roast from the principal engineer about how dumb their opinion was lingered in their heads—or more accurately, haunted them. Driven by that friction, they proceeded to map out the feature logic and flow of that specific ticket. Some mapped it from the endless UML diagrams they were given. One developer might favor raw-dogging .txt files with ----> arrows, while the more savvy ones used Markdown. The psycho ones used raw pen and paper, leaving a mountain of crumpled-up diagrams in their trash bins.

Then they went to lunch. Fresh with all the new contradictions they had just realized, they argued some more with everyone at the lunch table, sandwich in hand.

Notice how typing a single line of code is still not in the equation?

They got back from lunch, finally understanding exactly how the flow should work. But a new problem arose: this specific feature required a new library they hadn't actually tried yet.

"Easy, let's just open the docs and try it out," they thought.

Long story short: after writing some boilerplate and shedding a few tears, a couple hundred lines of code were finally written. But then, an edge case appeared. The engineers fired off a Stack Overflow question, only to get instantly ridiculed with a swift: "Closed, duplicate of X." They clicked that thread, only to find the top answer declaring: "You shouldn't do X, no one with a sane mind ever does X, do Y instead." Which, of course, was immediately followed by a comment stating, "Y is for amateurs, Z is better, you'd save some CPU cycles."

Eventually, they mashed X and Z together, slapped a // TODO: refactor this garbage later comment on top, and pushed the commit. It took three days to write 40 lines of code.

Notice how actually typing the code was the absolute easiest, most insignificant part of that entire ordeal?

A few days later, they opened the PR and stepped into an absolute bloodbath. Three guys actively bikeshedding over whether a // TODO should be formatted as a / / block. Two others writing multi-paragraph essays about how coupling X and Z is a maintainability nightmare, demanding a rewrite to use Y—only to get instantly slapped with the exact Stack Overflow link that caused the tears in the first place.

Then, the principal greybeard engineer descended from the heavens. He dropped a single comment: "LGTM, merge for now. X and Z is fine. I wrestled with this exact nightmare four years ago, and for our specific, deeply flawed architecture, this is the least terrible approach we can take."

The thread instantly flatlined. Nobody dared reply. The PR got merged.


Now, fast forward to today.

The new guy gets hired. He gets handed that exact same stack of vaguely worded Jira tickets. But there is no battle royale room. No one gets locked in. The greybeard principal engineer is on "Do Not Disturb" on Slack anyway. The new guy just highlights the entire chaotic, contradictory Jira ticket, hits Ctrl+C, dumps it into the chatbox of whatever premium LLM subscription the company is expensing this month, and adds a prompt: "Implement this. Figure out the logic."

The silicon doesn't argue back. It doesn't debate X vs Y. It just subserviently blinks its cursor and spews out a compromise-free architecture.

Whoah, we don't have to endure a bloody battle royale of conflicting opinions anymore.

After that? He doesn't go back to his desk haunted by a lukewarm roast. He doesn't bother visualizing the flow. He doesn't open a .txt file to raw-dog some arrows, and the trash bin stays completely devoid of crumpled-up paper. He just leans back and watches the tokens stream across the screen. When lunchtime hits, he goes to the cafeteria, puts on his noise-canceling headphones, and watches a YouTube video. No sandwich-in-hand arguments, no fresh contradictions to realize.

Whoah, we don't have to map out the logic or understand the flow of the feature anymore.

Then he gets back from lunch. The AI has spat out six separate files using that brand new library. He doesn't open the docs. He just highlights the block. Ctrl+C. Switches to his editor. Ctrl+V. He runs the dev server, but it throws a fatal error because the AI hallucinated a method on line 142.

Does he read the stack trace? Does he shed a tear? Does he brave the toxic wasteland of Stack Overflow? Absolutely not. He just copies the red text from his terminal, dumps it back into the chat, and says, "Fix it."

The AI doesn't close his question as a duplicate. It doesn't call him an idiot for wasting CPU cycles. It just grovels, "I apologize for the oversight!" and hands him the exact fix. He pastes it. It compiles. He pushes the commit and fires up a PR—which the AI automatically generates. The whole ordeal took fourteen minutes.

Whoah, we don't have to suffer the friction of actually knowing how the code works anymore.

A few minutes later, the PR is up. He didn't sweat over the description; he just clicked "Generate Summary." The reviewers are tagged. But there is no bloodbath. Nobody bikesheds over // TODO formatting. Nobody writes a multi-paragraph essay on why coupling X and Z is a maintainability nightmare. The other devs are too busy generating their own AI tickets to care. They glance at the green CI/CD checkmarks, skim the AI summary, and smash Approve.

The principal greybeard engineer doesn't descend from the heavens to impart four years of architectural trauma, because there's no debate to settle. The code technically runs. The thread remains completely dead, and the PR silently merges.


Fast forward two years.

The company's codebase has grown exponentially. It is now millions of lines of hallucinated abstractions and frictionless boilerplate, all stitched together by developers who haven't manually traced a stack trace since they were hired.

The greybeard principal engineer? He's old now. Tired. He's been quietly sidelined into an on-call "Emeritus" role while the company brags to investors about their new AI-driven sprint velocity.

It's a Saturday. He's two hours out of town, standing by a lake, fishing rod in hand, enjoying the absolute, offline silence.

Then, his pager goes off. Not a soft Slack ping. The harsh, mechanical screech of a P1 critical outage. Production isn't just down; it's bricked. Customers are locked out, data is de-syncing, and the primary database is chewing through its CPU limits.

He sighs, packs up his gear, and drives to the office.

When he walks in, the floor is in complete panic mode. The monitoring dashboards are bleeding red. He walks straight to the desk of the "new guy"—who is now technically a Senior Engineer, having shipped thousands of AI-assisted PRs over the last two years.

The greybeard leans over and pulls up the logs. He traces the bleeding to a specific transaction module. It is an absolute labyrinth of nested callbacks and bizarre logic routing that somehow passed every automated AI linter. He stares at it, trying to map the flow, but it doesn't make any human sense. It reads like an alien artifact.

He turns to the new guy. The guy whose name is on the git blame for every single line in that file.

"The transaction state is deadlocking the primary database," the greybeard says, his voice flat. "It's stuck in an endless retry loop. How did you implement this routing? What's the exact lifecycle of this state?"

The new guy blinks. He looks at the code. He looks at the greybeard. He doesn't pull out a .txt file. He doesn't grab a pen to draw the architecture flow. He doesn't even recognize the variable names.

He highlights the block of code, clicks over to his browser, and says, "Wait, I'll ask my AI."

The greybeard doesn't yell. He doesn't deliver a lukewarm roast about CPU cycles or maintainability nightmares. He just stands there, in total silence, watching this "Senior Engineer" paste their company's core production architecture into a chatbox, desperately waiting for a server farm in California to explain his own codebase back to him.

The greybeard reaches over and quietly shuts the new guy's laptop.
